Historical background of trophies
Trophies have always been associated with great achievements and victories. The origin of the word can even be traced back to the root word of “trope” in Greek which has the meaning of beating or defeating of the enemy. Originally awarded for war victories, trophies came in the form of battle arms which would be placed on sticks or tree trunks to symbolize victory over the enemy at the place where the battle took place. The items had inscriptions about the battle and were in those days dedicated to specific gods.
No longer dedicated to gods, trophies still resemble victory and as such still have a special place in society, just as the items held a unique place in Rome where Romans constructed specific shrines in the forms of arches or columns. Some of the shrines can still be seen today.
