Custom made medals are not modern inventions. The Victorian Cross, a British medal was introduced during the Crimean War in 1856 as an award to soldiers who showed extreme bravery during the course of a battle. The achievement awards were crafted from bronze that came from captured armour. Other medals of the time were that of the Distinguished Service Cross, and later the Star awarded for participation in the First World War.
Heroism has always been associated with the military awards, just as top achievement is today associated with custom made medals whether in sports, academics, cultural activities, and the arts. More affordable than trophies the custom made medals can be awarded to all the team members or participants of events such as marathons.
