The History and Evolution of Keyrings<\/strong><\/h2>\n

They adorn bags, are decorative toggles on backpacks, and hold memories. Without keyrings, our lives would be a little less organised and we would be spending more time searching for keys than opening doors. Charms, Talismans, and Tokens of Luck\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Long before keyrings were used for any practical purpose, they were used as lucky charms or talismans mostly worn around the neck or wrist. Headrest amulets were used by ancient Egyptians to protect the deceased when they crossed into the afterlife and the rabbit\u2019s foot has been a good luck charm for many nations. During the Second World War, soldiers carried shamrock-shaped good luck tokens to see them safely through battle. From 1700 BC until the industrial revolution, the interest in keyrings as charms grew in favour.<\/p>\n

Reinventing the Keychain<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The original concept of attaching a key to a fastener was patented by Frederick Loudin in 1894. These fasteners were used to prevent burglaries by attaching keys to doors. Not only was this device a useful tool in preventing would-be criminals from looking into keyholes but it also found its purpose as a means to not lose keys. Building on Loudin\u2019s creation was G Herluf Johnson who was awarded the patent in 1955 for the invention of the keyring<\/a> with its simplistic and easy design, making it possible to be mass-produced. Soon after Johnson\u2019s design, people started adding more than just keys to the keyrings.<\/p>\n

The manufacture of the basic keyring afforded car manufacturers and corporations alike the means to advertise their products and promote brand awareness. The unique and creative designs that were brought to the fore from the 1950s to the 1970s saw exponential growth for these cost-effective marketing tools.<\/p>\n
