What is the Difference Between Etching and Glass Sandblasting? <\/strong><\/h2>\n

The art of etching and glass sandblasting can find its origins in the 14th<\/sup> and 18th<\/sup> centuries respectively. In the Victorian era, etching was considered fashionable and decorative panels were created to adorn mirrors and doors in hotels, pubs, and shops. These art forms have evolved over time with both processes not only being used for ornamental purposes but for signifying accomplishments. Understanding the Basics<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Etching is a technique that consists of applying acidic, caustic, or abrasive substances to the surface of glass in order to produce a rough texture in selected areas with the end goal of creating a design. Abrasive materials are used to chip away at the surface, creating a frosted-looking surface that can be designed by covering sections of the surface with materials that resist the abrasives.<\/p>\n

Sandblasting basically involves sand particles being propelled along a tube on a high-speed current of air. The sand shoots through the nozzle at the end of the tube, hitting the glass and corroding the surface, leaving it with a milky white opaque appearance. The areas where designs are not needed are normally covered with adhesive vinyl, which leaves the remaining areas crystal clear.<\/p>\n
