Engraving or etching – that is the question
Engraving and etching are two methods that artists and technicians use to cut lines into a hard surface, typically metal. Before starting any project using these techniques, it is important to know exactly what you are dealing with, which materials you want to use and ultimately the end result. First introduced in the 15th century, these art forms were originally used for printmaking and have been improved upon in leaps and bounds. The basics, however, remains the same.
To start with, one should know the major difference between the two and it is that etching is a chemical process using acidity to etch lines into the surface leaving an intricate and detailed design whilst engraving cuts into the surface leaving a much deeper incision with the help of sharp tools and tends to be a more physical process. So, which technique is better? Neither. They both are chosen methods of design. It all depends on the finish that you are looking for.
The laser approach

With the advances in technology, laser etching and engraving have become the norm and add to streamlining your production process. Laser etching is ideal for thin and fragile materials creating high-contrast marks. It tends to be faster, requiring less energy but has poor abrasion resistance. Laser engraving is a slower process, thereby using a lot more power. On the plus side, it allows for more customisable designs and permanent and durable design patterns that cannot be removed with heavy wear and tear.
