The Purpose of Glass Sandblasting
Sandblasted glass may sound like a strange technical concept, but you’re probably more familiar with it than you think. A good example is usually bathroom windows, the ones you can’t see through for the sake of privacy. Yes, that is what it looks like – it is more commonly known as frosted glass.
We here at Trophy & Medal Boutique think it’s about time this technique got the appreciation it deserves, so we are dedicating this article to informing you about this popular technique.
What is Glass Sandblasting?
Firstly, it’s important to look at what this method entails and how it is then implemented, specifically to trophies and other awards. Sandblasting is a technique that etches glass, thereby giving it a more frosted look. This is done by using the naturally abrasive texture of sand to wear away at the surface of the material when applied with strong air pressure. This frosted look can also be achieved via what’s known as acid etching as acid is also an abrasive substance. Though, in this case, the reaction is more chemical in nature.
To apply a specific design to the award or object, a stencil is first secured to the surface. This stencil is specially made by exposing photographic film to ultraviolet. The stencil ensures that only the chosen areas are affected.
Interestingly, this method has even been used to clean surfaces, not just for design. The sand can actually remove rust, old paint, and other residues from different materials, such as metal.
The Advantages and Disadvantages of Glass Sandblasting
One of the main benefits of this wonderful technique is the absolutely beautiful designs it can achieve. This is especially true for awards, which you can then make more unique using this method of etching. Just have a look at what can be done with glass trophies when this technique is applied. The etching is also permanent, so you won’t have to worry about your elegant design fading over time.
Unfortunately, there is always a drawback to any technique and sandblasting is no different. One such disadvantage is the fact that sandblasting quite literally wears down the glass, which will weaken it. This means that your award is more likely to succumb to breakage, which is why we’d suggest purchasing a display case to display it safely (which, as you can see on our about page, is one of the many products we sell at Trophy & Medal Boutique). Another downside is that this is not a very precise etching method as the name may imply. This is why the aforementioned stencil is so important as it ensures that the material is only affected in the areas that the design will be etched onto.
