The Difference Between Sandblasting and Frosted Glass
Sandblasting is essentially the process of bombarding the surface of glass with sand, which peppers the surface, giving it a milky white appearance. As the surface is raised, it also lends to a slightly rough texture. It propels very fine bits of material at high velocity by steam or air to clean or etch a surface. This effect can also be achieved on other materials like wood and acrylic.
With frosted glass, the effect is usually achieved by applying hydrofluoric acid on one side to achieve a look that is opaque and translucent, commonly referred to as the frosted look. The acid reacts with the glass corroding the surface, providing it with a milky appearance, and tends to have a smoother surface texture.
At a glance, the appearance might be similar between sandblasting and frosted but the applications aren’t. Frosted glass is generally applied on larger objects such as doors and windows where a certain amount of privacy is required. It also limits the amount of light that is let in. Bathrooms usually spot that frosted look.
