Greek Roots
“Trophy” is derived from a Greek word, very much in keeping with the Olympic Games, although unlike today, winning athletes in ancient times were awarded a simple laurel wreath, albeit highly coveted.
Prior to the inception of the earliest Games, trophies were spoils of war, seized by or awarded to victorious combatants. Such items could include possessions of the vanquished, land, captured battle standards or colours, arms, captives or even body parts – all proudly displayed tokens of victory, courage or excellence.
