Different Types of Engraving
Carving designs onto surfaces has been done as far back as the palaeolithic era. Over time, the techniques used have evolved, allowing us to adorn objects, jewellery, and flat surfaces with text or printed images through the art of engraving. It is one of the oldest and most essential techniques in printmaking.
Building on this technique, we at Trophy and Medal Boutique are able to produce a variety of markings and designs on trophies, medals, and so much more that make them distinctive.
There are four main types of engraving used on different materials to create pieces that are as unique as the individuals receiving them.
Marking by Hand
The most intricate and labour-intensive method is by using your hand. This is usually done by a master artist using a specialised hand tool to push into the substance being engraved upon hard enough to leave a mark. Although the process may seem long, the results produced speak of unique works of art that are nearly impossible to replicate. Materials used are limited as it is challenging to etch into hard surfaces.
The CNC Method
This method has become increasingly popular in industrial engraving and uses computed numerically controlled (CNC) machines. By inputting data into a computer, it fabricates the markings quickly through a spindle and drive system, which is manipulated by the computer to engrave material in a specified pattern along three axes of a plane. This is a highly beneficial process as it allows items to be mass produced at a high rate.
Rotary and Diamond Drag Engraving
Rotary engraving makes use of a spinning cutter with a motor-powered spindle to cut or “rout” either entirely through the material to create cut-out shapes, or at a programmed depth to create grooves. This method can be used on a wide range of materials. Diamond drag engraving is a variation of rotary engraving where the same machine can be used with a diamond-tipped, non-rotating cutter called a “graver” to mark different materials.

Laser Technology
When it comes to markings that need to last a lifetime, then laser is the way to go. Not only is it the fastest method for marking items, but it is also the most cost effective. A laser beam physically removes the work piece’s surface, creating a cavity that reveals an image at eye level. Essentially, the substance is vaporised during the process due to the high levels of heat produced by the laser.
