The Origins of Lapel Badges
The Byzantine Empire, with origins that can be traced back to 330 AD, is considered to be the precursor for what we know as lapel badges or pins today. These fashion accessories were sculpted from a metalworking technique called cloisonné, which is still used for fashioning hair pins, jewellery, and fine art. The popularity of these badges came about in the late 1960s and early 1970s during the reign of the Yuan Dynasty in China, worn by the Chinese youth as a form of protest by the non-conformist younger generation.
Through technological advancements, various metalworking and enamel techniques have been introduced, making lapel badges what they are today.
Societal Affiliations
Lapel badges denote a form of affiliation to a specific societal group. In the 16th century, Italian men wore a form of a lapel badge called an enseigne on the brim of their hats, which signified a successful religious pilgrimage. Worn by different members of Masonic lodges and associated bodies, they symbolise an achievement or recognition of another member as to which rank or degree the person has achieved. At colleges and universities, there are many “secret” societies and the only way that you are aware of these societies is through the lapel badges that adorn jackets or collars.
